Walking along the tratturos

Image

The description of the paths is divided into stages whose length depends essentially on the accommodation available. Currently, three tratturos are proposed: Celano-Foggia, Castel di Sangro-Lucera, and Pescasseroli-Candela. Additionally, there is a route from Foggia to L'Aquila that makes use of several tratturi, primarily the Centurelle - Montesecco, which is followed in its entirety.

The site essentially contains the transcript of my travel diaries so there is no detailed information concerning directions, but these can be extrapolated directly from the GPS tracks provided. At the end of each article, there is a map showing the day's route. Such track, which cannot be downloaded, includes my navigational errors and deviations due to obstacles along the way and is provided for documentation purposes. The downloadable tracks are grouped in the "Track Gallery" and also include known water sources. They are obtained by amending the daily tracks to avoid obstacles or by retracing the stages in search of alternatives. Sometimes they are accompanied by a brief description of the route.

Please note that the tratturos are "unofficial" routes, so be prepared to adapt: sections that were navigated without problems may turn out to be closed due to vegetation, or other blocked sections may have been reopened. Some signage is present in Molise. It was created around 2000 with European funding. Unfortunately, whoever designed the signage was not a hiker: the "flag signs" (you will see what they are from the photos) are often placed where they are not needed, while they are missing where they would be essential. Since the signage was made of wood, it is now almost entirely destroyed and often leads to trails closed by vegetation: I have had difficulties several times because of the indications.

The last type of tracks, collected in "The original routes" page, are provided for reference only: the original routes of the tratturos were deduced from the old maps, and in most cases are no longer viable.

A collection of photos is proposed for each day: they can be expanded by double clicking on them and a slideshow can be launched too.

That said, I’ll let my travel stories do the talking. Have fun!
